Michael Ibsen is a versatile guitarist who has extensive experience as a teacher, performing artist, and professional musician. His education lies mainly in classical guitar performance and study, but he has experience performing rock and folk music, and teaches a variety of genres and styles. He has taught privately, as well as at the Chinook School of Music (Calgary, AB) and the Ambrose Music Academy (Calgary, AB). He has studied with Dr. Brad Mahon and Thomas Viloteau, and is currently studying with Daniel Bolshoy. He has also performed extensively in master classes for many renowned guitarists.
Michael is a three-time recipient of the Jason Lang Scholarship, and also a two-time recipient of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts grant. He was on the Dean’s List at Ambrose University, graduating with a GPA of 3.9. He has been a soloist with the Ambrose Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Calgary Arts Orchestra. He received third place in the 2015 National Music Festival representing Alberta, after winning first prize at the regional and provincial level.
Michael provides his students with a strong foundation in technique and musical knowledge. Whatever music they are playing, Michael guides each student to discover their own voice and expression on the guitar, teaching them to cultivate their own creativity.
